The School of Technology, which was formerly known as the School of Multimedia Studies was established in 2003. The following programmes were run through an agreement between the African Virtual University (AVU) and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT): BSc in Computer Science and Diploma in Computer Science. These programmes lasted until the agreement was abrogated in 2006.
In 2005, the School was re-named as School of Technology (SOT). In 2006, the School had oversight responsibilities over three units namely; the Distance Learning Centre (DLC), the Centre for IT Professional Development (CIPD) and the IT Department. These units remained under SOT until the second half of 2007 when management decided to make the three units autonomous. In 2009, the DLC and CIPD were returned to operate under the School. From December 2010, the CIPD was superintended by the Office of the Rector, and the DLC ceased operation. The CIPD was renamed in 2018 as Centre for IT Development (CITD) and made a centre within the School of Technology.

Mission
We build quality technology professionals through innovative education. We do this by delivering knowledge- and skills-based programmes in ICT, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, and other technology-related fields. We accomplish this by employing quality faculty and staff; state-of-the-art facilities; and efficient and effective systems.
